Here are a few of our favorites to look for:
The Real World: Yeah, it may be painful to watch this reality juggernaut after all these years but MTV still knows its way around amazing soundtracks. They’ll tell you who played what, too, if you head to the website after the show is over.
Gray’s Anatomy: ABC’s hit prime time drama may be on hiatus right now but it’s notorious for having some of the best music in the business. If you like indo-emo rock you’ve got to check out Grays and find your new favorite band.
The Walking Dead: You may not have noticed because you were screaming in terror but The Walking Dead has more to offer than zombies. The melancholy background music is cutting edge and you’ll hear some familiar favorites as well. Also, keep an ear out for some orchestral numbers, too.

With the new year coming quickly, there is no wonder that so many musicians are trying to get their albums out before the autumn season ends. There are artists in several genres that are doing the best that they can to please their fans by releasing their records as quickly as possible. From Metallica and Lou Reed to Mastadon and Saint Vitus, the list of artists is quickly filling up as more and more new music starts to flood the industry.

Saint Vitus has been very vocal about their new album. It is coming very soon and they claim that it will be sure to win over even the pickiest of their fans. They have been silent so far about naming the album, but they claim that it is some of the best material that they have ever recorded.

Metallica and Lou Reed are also collectively releasing a new album this autumn season. Entitled “Lulu”, it is a series of plays from the 1800s that have been adapted into song by this unlikely group of collaborators. Lulu is unlike anything in Metallica’s catalog so far and it is sure to make fans reflect deeply upon the forces of creativity and abstract art.

In order to sell your originally recorded tunes in the past you had to have a recording company to get the music on the radio for you.
You were tied to a contract, using their A&R people to select the material, and tied to a studio they approved with producers that they hired. Very little creative control stayed with the artist, until they reached the higher point in their career where their demands would be met by the label executives.
Today’s music world is totally different. Although home recording has been around since use of the wire recorder in the 1950′s (before tape recording) you could only make demo quality recordings, and had a hard time sharing the music with anyone. Even the best home recordings often got no exposure at all.
Now you can make a great sounding recording with all sorts of devices, from laptop computers running studio simulation software, to hand held digital recorders with multi-track functionality. You can mix the tracks down, master them and turn out a quality recording anywhere.
Then in the greatest change to the music industry, you can upload the songs to the web, have them available to download for free, or post them to sites that will sell them for you. You can then get your royalties paid to an account you set up at minimal cost.
The artist now has creative control, business control, and total involvement in the music from the start to the finished product. This is what music in the 21st century is all about.

MTV. Music Television. That’s how it was introduced to the world in 1981. The words “Ladies and Gentlemen, rock and roll” were heard. And the first music video ever shown was The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star”. So what killed MTV?

Before MTV there were teen magazines. These magazines were the portal to your music idols. You could see pictures of them, read about their personal lives, and get as close to them as you could without being at a concert. Then MTV came along. It was a whole new world where you could watch your favorite singer or band badly lip-synching to a silly, more often than not cheesy, music video. But they were as live as you could get without front seat tickets.

Then along came the internet and reality TV. On the internet you can pop up any music star you want, hear their songs, watch them in concert, or just stalk their lives and find out everything you want to know. Reality TV gave people a chance to watch “real” people living their every day lives in front of the camera. How could a fake music video ever live up to that?

The 80′s were a time when hearing your favorite song was not the same without seeing the video that made it so exciting. The videos were what made the songs popular, sadly many that should not have been popular in the first place. But everyone watched just the same. Even if you were watching the same videos over and over, as was the case when MTV started.

At least the often asked question of “How can they call it Music Television when they don’t play any music?” can finally be put to rest. MTV has, sadly, removed the “Music Television” from it’s logo.

From Jethro Tull to Smells Like Teen Spirit, the Grammy Awards certainly have a reputation for not always getting it right. This year was no different with a few decisions that really make your head spin when you think about them.

While Katy Perry boasted nominations in just about every category she was eligible for it was certainly surprising to see another current pop icon get snubbed completely. With multiple hit singles and an album with huge sales you would think that Keha would be right up the Grammy Awards’ alley. Instead she seemed to have been left behind by her “California Dreams” counterpart.

It was also shocking to see a Grammy Awards without Alicia Keys nominated for anything. With her album “The Element of Freedom” exposing the raw emotion that she carries and her single “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart” being one of her best works one would think she would at least get a few nominations. It seems the Awards had different thoughts, however.

It’s honestly hard to take an award show seriously that gives Esparanza Spalding the nod over Mumford and Sons or seems to be so infatuated with Lady Antabellum that there might as well not be any other nominees when they are in the categories. This is the award show we have though, so this is the award show we’ll watch.

Arcade Fire is quickly becoming one of the most influential bands of our generation. Especially with the commercial success that came with their 2010 album, The Suburbs. But what comes next for this one-time unknown Indie rock band?
This is definitely a question the band themselves are struggling with. The 53rd annual Grammy awards brought them a level of popularity and fame that they had definitely not been expecting. However, they want to avoid the pitfall of so many bands before them, the mainstream music business. Because Arcade Fire has floated beneath the mainstream radar for so long, they have always been allowed a lot of creative input for their various albums and music videos. In most cases, however, when a band becomes more publically recognized more pressure is put upon them to conform to mainstream values.
So what will happen with Arcade Fire’s newfound success? Will they travel the path of so many bands before them and crumble under the new media pressure or worse yet, change their unique viewpoint to appeal to the masses? Or will they somehow manage to combine the qualities that brought them success in the first place with the qualities most people look for in a mainstream band? I suppose only time will tell!More info here: Listen Arcade Fire’s “Ready To Start” Gets An Eletronic Makeover

The most valuable rock guitar player on the scene would indisputably be Eric Clapton. Eric began playing the guitar at age 13 as a blues performer. In 1962, he explored the rock and roll scene and transitioned into the rock genre.

At the age of 17, Eric joined his first band. After it dispersed, Eric was recruited by the Yardbirds. He was the most talked about guitar player on the rock circuit. After joining the Bluesbreakers in 1965, Eric earned the nickname, “God” from an admirer.

Eric attained superstar status while touring the US with Cream. Around 1970, Eric was encouraged to sing more and began composing songs. His self-titled album was released that year.

Eric’s career has lasted more than 40 years and is still going strong. He is the lone triple inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame – installed for his part in the Yardbirds, Cream, and as a solo artist. He has won 18 Grammy Awards including one for the track, Tears in Heaven.

He continues to tour the globe bringing music to fans as well as sponsoring numerous non-profit organizations. Live Aid is perhaps his largest mission for charity. Eric Clapton is an idol of many and an icon to all in music. He has been and continues to be the most valuable guitar player in rock!

People are always debating who is the best rock guitar player, rock singer and rock drummer alive. But, it seems that the bass player seems to always get overlooked in these conversations. The bass is an important part of a rock band’s sound. So, who is the best rock bass player alive? Well, there are a few considerations that you must take into effect when you decide this. Overall effect on rock music, importance to their band and technical ability.

The first person I thought of when I thought about these guidelines was Paul McCartney. He was in the greatest rock band of all time, The Beatles. He wrote some of the most important and most well written rock songs of all time. He also is a technically sound bass player. His style is understated compared to some guys who slap away or take bass solos on every song. But, he has great tone and always seems to play what is right for the song. This task is probably made a little easier by the fact that he wrote most of the music that he is playing but you shouldn’t discount him for that. For these reasons I think that Paul McCartney is the greatest living rock bass player.
