Arcade Fire is quickly becoming one of the most influential bands of our generation. Especially with the commercial success that came with their 2010 album, The Suburbs. But what comes next for this one-time unknown Indie rock band?
This is definitely a question the band themselves are struggling with. The 53rd annual Grammy awards brought them a level of popularity and fame that they had definitely not been expecting. However, they want to avoid the pitfall of so many bands before them, the mainstream music business. Because Arcade Fire has floated beneath the mainstream radar for so long, they have always been allowed a lot of creative input for their various albums and music videos. In most cases, however, when a band becomes more publically recognized more pressure is put upon them to conform to mainstream values.
So what will happen with Arcade Fire’s newfound success? Will they travel the path of so many bands before them and crumble under the new media pressure or worse yet, change their unique viewpoint to appeal to the masses? Or will they somehow manage to combine the qualities that brought them success in the first place with the qualities most people look for in a mainstream band?
